1st Round: According to ESPN, incredibly, the Patriots are just one of two teams that have not drafted a single Pro Bowler in the last five years. (The other is Cincinnati.) Given Bill Belichick s penchant for traing down and storing up picks it s understandable. New England traded away its first-round pick (23rd overall) for the Chargers second and third-round picks (Nos. 37 and 71). According to PFF, the Patriots win that trade 59% of the time. In other words, Bill Belichick made a great trade, while the Chargers gave up too much.

Balance Of The Draft: As usual, most of New England s picks were spent with the future in mind. Dugger is a bit of a head-scratcher for the simple reason that the Patriots entered this draft with four quality safeties already: the recently re-signed Devin McCourty, do-it-all box player Patrick Chung, grossly underrated ex-Charger Adrian Phillips and the lesser-known Terrence Brooks, who performed nicely as Chung s backup last season. In playing for Lenoir-Rhyne and going up against lower-level competition, Dugger is a huge unknown, as he dominated just because of his unreal athleticism. He did, however, have a nice Senior Bowl showing On offense, to fill the still-enormous void left by Rob Gronkowski s retirement/recent trade, Bill Belichick drafted two tight ends just 10 picks apart ... While Asiasi was a safer pick over Keene, the higher ceiling belongs to Keene. He was very underused at Virginia Tech but flashed great after-the-catch ability (nine broken tackles on 59 career catches, 9.7 yards after the catch per reception in career) and is an incredible athlete. The bottom line is the Patriots passed on Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm and they need a quarterback like blood.
