I'm Damian Sosh and here are 5 things you didn't know about me...
- 1. I was born in Reading, PA and grew up just outside the city. I’m the youngest of six — three older brothers and two older sisters — with a 16 year age gap between me and my oldest brother. He attended Notre Dame, and I still have a picture of myself at about seven years old in his dorm with two of the guys who lived on his floor. They were starting linemen for the Irish, and as a little kid I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. My competitiveness comes directly from my siblings; they never let me win at anything. Some of my favorite childhood memories were when everyone was home at the same time and I’d sleep on a lawn chair. I’d wake up with the imprint of the chair on my face and think it was the greatest thing ever.
- 2. Growing up, I loved going to Reading Phillies games with my friends. General admission was only $2.50, and it was a beautiful ballpark to watch a game. We’d look up the rising stars of the Eastern League and wait outside the locker room before and after games to get autographs. Those were some of the best memories of my childhood.
- 3. My parents were the best. I played a ton of sports growing up, and they drove me everywhere for practices and games. In high school I played soccer, basketball, and baseball. Our school was so small that we didn’t have a football team, but I would’ve loved the chance to play. I was a pretty solid athlete — starting as a freshman in baseball and soccer, and as a junior in basketball. Baseball ran in the family: two of my uncles played in the minors, and my dad had the opportunity as well but chose a different path. He was drafted into WWII and landed on Omaha Beach during D-Day. When the war ended, he came home, and at that time he actually made more money having served during the war and working as a mailman afterward than he would have playing baseball. How times have changed.
- 4. After high school, I attended Shippensburg University and earned a BS in Geo-Environmental Science. Kind of geeky, I know, but I’ve always been fascinated by that field — or maybe I just liked playing in the dirt. Even so, my true passion has always been sports, both watching and competing.
- 5. I currently live just outside Philadelphia, about seven miles from the South Philly stadium complex. I’m happily married with two young children — my son is 13 and my daughter is 7. My playing days, unfortunately, are behind me. When my son was 10, his coaches held a parents vs kids game to end the soccer season, and I tore my Achilles and calf. The recovery was long, and I’m still hesitant to run for fear of re-injury. I have a ton of respect for athletes who come back from injuries like that. The silver lining: the parents won the game.
