The NFL All-Time GOAT: Joe Cool or Tom Terrific
Posted: 2020-03-23

With Tom Brady moving on to Tampa Bay after 20 brilliant seasons in New England with the Patriots, the argument of the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) quarterback in the NFL is percolating again.

After adding an unprecedented sixth Super Bowl ring with the Pats SB LIII win over the Los Angeles Rams in 2018, Brady certainly strengthened his case against legendary QB Joe Montana for right to wear the cloak of GOAT.

With it, the never-ending comparison between these two legends continues, and rightfully so. Montana played 16 seasons and Brady 20, or 14 and 18 respectively if you eliminate Brady’s 2000 rookie campaign and his knee injured 2008 season in which he appeared in only one game each year while attempting a total of 14 passes, and Montana’s 1991 and 1992 limited him to one game with 21 passes.

The numbers read as follows:

  Brady Montana
Category
Pass Attempts 9,988 5,391
Completions 6,377 3,409
Passing Yards 74,571 40,551
Passing TDs 541 273
Interceptions 179 139
Passer Rating 92.3 97.0

Brady holds the statistical edge, but it should be noted he has played the better half of his career in a "quarterback friendly era" where the emphasis on the passing game continues to grow with each passing season.

More important, when comparing a tale of the tape between these two fabled signal callers we delve into my well-oiled machine for a comparative study on how each performed AST (Against The Spread). It's here where the two draw barefaced similarities. Check out the similarities. All results are ATS, with the exception of 'Overall SU', which is Straight Up.

All career starts:

Category Brady Montana
Overall SU 249-75 133-54
Overall ATS 187-127-10 115-71
Home 96-61-6 56-40
Away 84-61-2 56-30
Favorite 147-111-8 87-58
Dog 36-16-2 22-12
Team Off Loss 43-21-1 38-10
Team Off BB Loss 10-4 10-1
Playoff SU 31-10 16-7
Playoff ATS 22-18-1 13-10

The one deciding stat that most likely serves as the tiebreaker was how each quarterback performed against opponents that owned the better record. In such games, Brady is 39-13 SU and 37-11-4 ATS. Montana was 21-21 SU and 25-17 ATS.

Thus by the narrowest of noses, Tom Terrific edges out Joe Cool in a photo finish as the NFL's all-time GOAT. Either way they are two purebred thoroughbreds that own a pedigree unlike any quarterback to ever play in the league.
